We've all heard the expression, "If it sounds too good to be true...it is" but unfortunately too many consumers fail to follow this advice. The best way to protect yourself from schemes and scams in the marketplace is to stay informed. Here are some general guidelines to avoid losing your money to fraud.

1. Be cautious about buying anything over the telephone unless you initiate the call and you're certain you are calling a reputable company
2. Read and understand all sales agreements and contracts before signing your name
3. Research products and educate yourself about services before making a purchase
4. When you need to purchase a service, ask friends and relatives to recommend professionals or businesses which they have successfully used in the past
5. Never pay money for a prize
6. Never buy on impulse
